Dissolved Organic Matter Processing in Pristine Antarctic Streams

چکیده

Accelerated glacier melt and runoff may lead to inputs of labile dissolved organic matter (DOM) downstream ecosystems stimulate the associated biogeochemical processes. However, still little is known about glacial DOM composition its processing before entering ocean, although function in food webs largely depends on composition. Here, we employ a set molecular optical techniques (UV–vis absorption fluorescence spectroscopy, 1H NMR, ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry) elucidate Antarctic streams change. Glacial consisted mixture small microbial-derived biomolecules. NMR analysis bulk water revealed that these molecules were processed into more complex, structurally unrecognizable molecules. The extent varied between streams. By applying multivariate statistical (compositional data) data, identified compounds tightly moved parallel Lakes middle flow paths enhanced residence time allowed for both production. In conclusion, substantial Antarctica affects amounts biologically substrates enter ocean.

Organic Matter Processing in Tropical Streams

Organic matter derived from many sources provides a basis for stream food webs. In terms of weight, leaves from the surrounding land constitute the largest allochthonous source of energy for stream consumers, but other items, including fruits, flowers, wood and twigs, and terrestrial insects, are also important. Timing of allochthonous inputs can vary markedly due to the phenology of the ripari...

Importance of microbial soil organic matter processing in dissolved organic carbon production.

Soil dissolved organic carbon (DOC) sources and its seasonal dynamics are poorly known. We aimed to determine the contribution of plant and soil organic matter (SOM) to size classes of DOC in a field experiment with C3 to C4 vegetation change on two soil types through different seasons. Stable isotope ratios of DOC size classes were measured using size exclusion chromatography (SEC) coupled onl...

Dissolved Organic Matter in Headwater Streams: Compositional Variability across Climatic Regions of North America

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) represents the largest organic matter pool in freshwater systems, but much of it remains molecularly uncharacterized. Although freshwater systems cover only a small area of the earth’s surface, inland waters are an important component of the global carbon cycle. The traditional idea that rivers are simply conduits for refractory carbon delivery to coastal areas is...

Photochemical andmicrobial alteration of dissolved organic matter in temperate headwater streams associated with different land use

[1] Photochemical and microbial transformations of DOM were evaluated in headwater streams draining forested and human-modified lands (pasture, cropland, and urban development) by laboratory incubations. Changes in DOC concentrations, DOC isotopic signatures, and DOM fluorescence properties were measured to assess the amounts, sources, ages, and properties of reactive and refractory DOM under t...
